A DPF, or Diesel Particulate Filter, is a filter in a diesel vehicle's exhaust system that traps harmful soot (particulate matter) to reduce air pollution, becoming a legal requirement for emissions standards. It works by capturing soot in a ceramic or silicon filter until it gets full, then performs a process called regeneration, burning the soot off into less harmful ash, often automatically during longer drives, but requiring attention (and potentially costly cleaning or replacement) if it clogs.

How Does the DPF

Work?

Capture: The DPF's narrow channels trap fine soot particles from the exhaust. Regeneration: When the filter fills, the engine initiates regeneration, burning the soot at high temperatures (around 600°C). Passive Regeneration: Occurs automatically during sustained high-speed driving (like motorway journeys). Active Regeneration: Triggered by the car's computer when passive regeneration isn't enough, often indicated by increased fuel use or fan noise.
